All you need is a SSL-enabled browser (most modern browsers support SSL). Before establishing a SSL connection, the browser first reads our server certificate and then goes to the certification authority to verify that the document and our server address are valid and correctly allocated. This procedure ensures that your data is actually sent to the web site operator, avoiding it to be redirected to third parties. The certificate also contains the encoding key.
However, secure SSL connections run considerably slower than unencrypted connections.
